Waders & Wax: A Curated Vinyl List
Waders & Wax: A Curated Vinyl List
by Jamison Harvey / DJ Prestige
For a good portion of my life, I’ve been a vinyl record collector and DJ. I ran a site called FleaMarketFunk.com for more than 15 years and have DJed, toured, written books, LP liner notes, and more since the late ’90s. I still DJ today and host a long-running night called Shake! in Crown Heights, Brooklyn
Fly fishing was something I’d always wanted to learn, but it wasn’t until I bought a house near the birthplace of the sport, coupled with the unfortunate death of my father, that I made one of the best decisions of my life and became a fly fisherman. I jumped in headfirst: taking casting classes, reading every book I could find about history, flies, and reading water, and listening religiously to Tom Rosenbauer, Mill House, Flylords, and Troutbitten podcasts on my commutes to the Catskills. Like record digging, I became completely obsessed.
Fly fishing gave me peace, solace, and comfort during the biggest loss of my life. However frustrating the learning curve was early on, getting flies stuck in trees, filling my waders, breaking a new rod, it was always worth standing in the middle of a river freezing, whether I caught a trout or not. It’s become a huge part of my life and a form of weekly meditation that keeps me grounded year-round.
When DJing, you’re picking records to move a dancefloor; on the river, you’re picking flies to match the hatch and reading water like you’re reading a crowd. Whether I get lost in music or the outdoors, both give me the same feeling. The rush of someone telling me a set made their night, or the tug of a trout on the line, keeps me coming back.
What also keeps me going are the friendships built through both worlds. Record stories, fish stories, and lifelong memories all tied together through a shared passion.
These days, I’m lucky enough to combine both DJing and fly fishing. Last month, I DJed a Theodore Gordon Flyfishers and Dette Flies party for the Catskill Crew in Livingston Manor, NY. When VT asked me to write about fifty of my favorite records (in no particular order), I jumped at the chance. Vintage Trouts has become my go-to spot for vintage fly-fishing gear, history, typography, and regional memorabilia. Here are fifty records I spin before or after the river, whether I catch something or not.
